STUDENT PROFILE
Our school is designed to work with students who show potential, but who may be struggling in their homes, schools, or communities. Prior to coming to
Royal Gorge
Academy
, many of our students are determined to “do their own thing,” regardless of whom they hurt, or how their attitude may affect their future. The typical student seeking admittance to
Royal Gorge
Academy
is enrolled in the 7th through 12th grade, and has demonstrated any one or more of the following behaviors:
● Academic underachievement and/or school avoidance
● Shows potential, but struggles at home or in the community
● Low self-esteem
● Resistant and oppositional to authority
● Unresolved grief reactions, including parental divorce
● Disrespectful of rules, standards, and social values
● Drastic changes in peer associations
● Shows signs of substance abuse
Our goal is to help students develop the academic skills, the discipline, and the motivation necessary for their long-term success. How long this process takes varies with each student; therefore, the length of enrollment at our school is based upon progress, rather than time.
We believe that academic success is very much affected by character development; with this in mind, we have an effective Character Development Program that is interwoven with the student’s academic progress and achievement.
Our school is not recommended for students who are suicidal, psychotic, violent, abusive, court adjudicated, diabetic, schizophrenic, severely dyslexic, illiterate, maximum full-scale IQ of less than 95, serious health problems, or traumatic brain injury. We can recommend good treatment programs for these types of students.
There is enough leeway within our student profile to allow for the unusual student who may have special needs or who has tested poorly or otherwise needs additional considerations.
Royal Gorge
Academy
does not discriminate in terms of a student’s enrollment based on race, religion, nationality, sex, or ethnic background. Due to the nature of
Royal Gorge
Academy
’s program, we will not accept students over the age of 17 ½, and we are not able to adequately serve the needs of students with substantial physical limitations or disabilities.
